Welcome to Le Pigeon

23 Rue des Tonneliers, 67000 Strasbourg, France

General Info

Walking into Le Pigeon in the heart of Strasbourg feels like stepping into a place where Alsatian food traditions are taken seriously, yet served in a relaxed, welcoming way. The location on Rue des Tonneliers makes it easy to find, especially for anyone exploring the old town streets and looking for a proper local restaurant experience with a comforting, homestyle menu.

The atmosphere inside is warm and straightforward, with seating arranged in a way that suits both small groups and family-style dining. It has that casual diner energy where people settle in without rushing, often over a full meal and a glass of something local. Dine-in service is the main focus here, and the staff keep things smooth and attentive without being intrusive. High chairs are available too, which makes it practical for families visiting the area.

The menu leans heavily into traditional Alsatian dishes, and that is where the experience really becomes memorable. One of the standout choices is the Choucroute Alsacienne, a classic plate that brings together the region’s signature flavors in a hearty, satisfying way. Another local favorite is Schnecken, which adds a more unique touch for those wanting something a little different from standard restaurant fare. The Pork Knuckle with Potatoes and Cabbage is rich and filling, perfect for colder days, while the Beef Paupiette with Potatoes and Cabbage offers a softer, more delicate balance of flavors that still feels deeply rooted in local cooking traditions. Finishing off with a Café Alsacien gives the meal a grounded, comforting end that ties everything together.

Service-wise, the restaurant offers alcohol selections that pair naturally with the menu, along with simple seating arrangements that keep the focus on the food itself. Payments are flexible with checks accepted, which adds convenience for both locals and travelers.

From a review perspective, the experience feels consistent and dependable rather than overly complex. It is the kind of place where the menu speaks for itself, and the dishes arrive with a sense of honesty and familiarity. The dining flow feels natural, especially when moving from starters to heavier main plates, and everything is paced for relaxed eating rather than quick turnover. The overall impression is of a restaurant that values tradition, portion satisfaction, and straightforward hospitality in the center of Strasbourg’s food scene

What customers say?

“ Lovely French cafe (family owned since 1964) serving excellent authentic Alsatian food! We had the Baeckeoffe (baker’s oven) which consists of potatoes, mutton, beef, pork, onions, and seasoning marinated in a white wine for three days, and then cooked in a dough-sealed pot for three hours. It was amazing, and the presentation was neat! We also had the roast chicken with homemade Spaetzle noodles and creamy Alsatian sauce. For dessert, we couldn’t resist the homemade spiced apple cake they had on display. As I mentioned, this place is family owned and operated, and they very much care about what they do. Lovely people and a lovely place. Go here! ”

“ Absolutely lovely little restaurant in Strasbourg. We were looking for something small and intimate and ideally locally owned and we found it here. The building is historic and so quaint. The food was excellent and the service was too. I had the 1/4 poulet with spaetzle and he had the Baekeoffe - both are Alsatian specialties and were cooked to perfection. We also had Escargots and AppleKuchen - both fantastic. ”

“ Wonderful restaurant that seemed to be full of locals. We had a wonderful lunch and the atmosphere was comfortable. The food was comforting on a cold day, along with a 50cl of local wine. Highly recommend! The service was friendly and prompt. ”
